MERMAID VIBES IN CURAÇAO: HOW TO BRING THE OCEAN OUT IN YOURSELF
Anouk van Haaster
Curaçao. An island where you can endlessly stare at the horizon. Where the sea takes on every shade of blue you can imagine. And where, without even noticing, you slowly become a little more relaxed.
As soon as I hear the sound of waves gently breaking on the shore, I already feel it. Something inside me slows down. As if my breathing naturally deepens and my thoughts lose their rush. And when I step into the water - even if it’s just up to my ankles - I feel myself becoming more relaxed. The sea does something to me. The salt on my skin, the endless horizon, the rhythm of the waves… I absolutely love it!
I call it mermaid vibes: that feeling of completely being in the moment. Moving with the rhythm of the ocean. Feeling connected to something bigger, without needing to explain it. In Curaçao, that feeling is everywhere. Here, the sea seems to naturally invite you to let go, slow down, and just be. Whether you’re floating in the water, walking along the coast, or lying in the sun listening to the waves - you feel it.
So if you want to fully immerse yourself in island life, here are my favorite ways to bring out your inner mermaid (or merman).
1. Windsurfing: finding flow on the water
Sometimes magic is in trying something new. Or doing something you already know, but in a place that makes everything feel different. Curaçao is the perfect place for windsurfing, especially around Spanish Water. Flat, calm water, but enough wind to play with. Perfect whether you’re a beginner or already have some experience.
My tip for lessons is Surfspot Curaçao. A lovely beach bar and windsurf school with a relaxed vibe. Think Bob Marley beats in the background, bare feet in the sand, a beautiful sunset, and mostly just chilling (after sport).
Extra fun at Surfspot:
• Sunset SUP sessions on Fridays
• The monthly Floating Fish Market with fresh fish, music, and dancing
2. Surfing in a bikini: yes, it’s really possible here
Windsurfing was new for me, but I’ve surfed all over the world. And honestly, I usually go to Bali, Sri Lanka, Spain, or Portugal. But Curaçao surprised my surf heart.
Because yes, Curaçao also has waves. You just need to know where to go. Surfing is less known here, but there is real surf talent from the island. For example Tiara van der Huls, who competes internationally. It shows the surf level here is higher than you might expect.

What I loved most: surfing without a wetsuit, warm water, a relaxed lineup without crowds. I rented my board at Surfboard Rental Curaçao. Super chill, personal advice from Nadine, and she picks you up and takes you to the right spot with her 4x4. Speaking of mermaids, she truly is one! She knows exactly which spot and board suit your level. Surfing here feels pure and local, like stepping into a hidden world.
And yes, as relaxed as the island is, surfing is still hard work. Expect falling, swallowing saltwater, and getting back up. That’s part of it.

3. Kayaking through the mangroves: pure peace
If the sea gives you energy, the mangroves give you peace. Kayaking through the Curaçao Rif Mangrove Park felt like a kind of meditation to me. Still water, just the sound of your paddle and nothing else. Occasional fish beneath you and birds all around. With a guide, you learn everything about the ecosystem, how important this nature is for the island, and how much life exists beneath the calm surface.
This area is managed by the CARMABI Foundation, which has been working for years on nature conservation, education, and scientific research in Curaçao.
During your visit, you quickly realize mangroves are much more than just beautiful nature. They protect the coastline, serve as a nursery for young fish, and play a huge role in biodiversity above and below water.
What makes it special is how knowledge comes alive. Thanks to the passionate CARMABI specialists, you don’t just look, you understand. They share their insights with enthusiasm, giving you a completely new perspective when you step out of the water. Be sure to check their website too, as they do much more than the mangrove park. From coral research to environmental education and island protection, their work is essential for preserving Curaçao’s unique natural environment.

4. Klein Curaçao: ultimate mermaid paradise
If there is one place where you truly feel one with the water, it’s here. Klein Curaçao is an uninhabited island with white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, and an endless horizon.
You get there by boat tour. I went with Miss Ann - fast, comfortable, and luxurious vibes, and before you know it, you’re stepping onto this paradise island.
What makes it magical:
• Swimming with sea turtles
• Snorkeling in beautiful water
• Completely going offline
Snorkeling here is truly special. With just a mask, you already see so much - colorful fish, coral, and if you’re lucky, a turtle swimming calmly by. Just keep your distance; these creatures were here long before us.
What made it even more meaningful for me is that Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao is often present. I spent time with them and learned about turtle protection. It gives your experience so much more depth and makes you see things more consciously.
Another tip: some tours even offer massages on the beach. After a morning of swimming and snorkeling, lying in the sun while getting a massage… that’s peak beach life in my opinion.
5. Sunday at Caracasbaai: local vibes and salt on your skin
After all the water sports, peace, and adventure, there’s another side I love: enjoying, connecting, and experiencing real island life. On Sundays, you have to go to Caracasbaai.
This is not your typical beach day. It’s music, local families gathering, food being shared, dancing in the sand, and the occasional swim. Everything feels authentic and unpolished.
My favorite restaurant to end the day is Brisa do Mar, right by the water. Simple but so good. Fresh fish, cheese balls, and a glass of Pinot Grigio. This is the island as it’s meant to be felt.

Curaçao has something magical. Not only above the water, but especially below it. One moment you’re floating on your surfboard. The next, you’re dancing on the beach with sand between your toes.
And… who knows… maybe there’s a mermaid (or merman) in you too.
