Some places have something special from the very first moment. You step inside and immediately feel: this is where I want to stay. An atmospheric interior, art on the walls, great music, delicious food, an eye for detail, and people with their own story. It's exactly those kinds of places that give a destination character. And Curaçao happens to be incredibly good at that.

Before I begin: this is just a small selection. Because Curaçao is full of creative entrepreneurs, colorful cafés, hidden courtyards, local restaurants, and special boutique hotels. Far more than I could ever fit into a single blog. But these are a few of the places that made my heart skip a beat. Places with their own identity, with soul. Places that, years later, still make you think: 'oh yes... that one was lovely.'

So for everyone who, like me, loves to look beyond the beaten path: here's my personal little list of creative Curaçao hotspots.

Mosa/Caña: Where Food and Art Come Together

Some restaurants have delicious food. Others have atmosphere. And then there are places where everything comes together. For me, Mosa/Caña is one of those places. Housed in a beautiful monumental building in Pietermaai, it feels different the moment you walk in. Everywhere you look there's color, plants, art, and details that catch your attention. It's lively, yet you can still have a good conversation, which is a real plus. On top of that, it's a creative, trendy spot without ever feeling forced or contrived. It grew into what it is completely naturally. First there was Mosa, named after the owner's grandmother, who was known for her love of cooking. Later came Caña, and since 2021 the two together form Mosa/Caña.

What makes Mosa/Caña extra special to me are the enormous murals. Here, art doesn't play a supporting role — it's truly an essential part of the whole experience. The two impressive murals on the exterior were created especially for the two owners by artist Francis Sling. Although they're by the same artist, they differ completely in look and feel. It's precisely that contrast that makes them so special and gives the restaurant even more character. You'll come across Francis Sling's work in several places on Curaçao. Personally, it always makes me happy; his colorful murals instantly give every place more character. His vibrant style gives buildings character and ensures that a place gets a story.

While the shared-dining dishes come across the table and creative cocktails are being poured, my gaze regularly wanders to the artworks around me. That says it all, really. Apologies in advance to my future dining companions — I get a bit distracted by the walls, because at Mosa/Caña the eye definitely wants its share too. Mosa/Caña is so much more than a restaurant to me. It's a place where gastronomy, creativity, and culture come together. A place you don't just taste, but experience.

James: A Hidden Gem in Pietermaai

Tucked away in a charming little alley in Pietermaai, you'll find this cozy hotspot where I love to plop down with a latte, a magazine, and — above all — nothing much on my schedule. Some places don't scream for attention. James is one of those places. It's the little things that make the difference here. The art on the walls. The calm atmosphere. The interior that feels warm and inviting. But also something as simple as the tableware. Because yes, I'm one of those people who gets happy over a beautiful coffee cup. Coffee genuinely tastes different to me when it's served in a handmade cup with character. At James, they understand those kinds of details.

James is located next to the charming boutique hotel Pietermaai Oasis. Right in the heart of bustling Pietermaai, yet with a relaxed atmosphere. A beautiful green oasis, with a lovely little pool and (pastel) colorful walls that add to the vacation feeling. Here it feels like you've briefly escaped the hustle and bustle. The kind of place where you easily stay an hour longer than planned and, over a coffee, strike up a conversation with your neighbor — who, thanks to James, is also completely relaxed and has slipped into a slower gear.

Boutique Fuik: Experience Curaçao Like a Local

Sometimes, during a trip, you don't just want to stay somewhere. You want to *live* somewhere. That's the feeling I had at Boutique Fuik Curaçao. This small-scale accommodation is located a little further from the center of Willemstad. And that's exactly why I loved it so much. Here you experience Curaçao in a different way. Quieter and more local. More like you actually live there. The apartments are tastefully decorated and feature their own kitchen and a large table. Ideal if, like me, you occasionally combine a bit of work with island life.

But what really makes this place special is the atmosphere. The large tropical garden feels almost like a little jungle. There's a beautiful pool nestled among the greenery. And there are adorable dachshunds — and tortoises — wandering around, instantly winning over every animal lover.

And then there's owner Veronique. The kind of person who makes you feel welcome from the very first moment. The result? A place where, within a few days, you forget you're actually on vacation.

BOHO Boutique Hotel: A Dream for Boho Lovers

Anyone who knows me knows I have a soft spot for boho interiors. Soft colors. Beautiful tiles. Lots of plants. Vintage finds. A mix of influences from different cultures. The kind of spaces where you constantly discover new details. So when I stayed at BOHO Boutique Hotel, I felt right at home — it could easily have been my own interior. In the heart of Pietermaai lies this colorful boutique hotel where creativity is visible in practically every corner. To me, it felt like a mix of Moroccan boho vibes, Portuguese charm (hello, beautiful tiles), and the tropical energy of Curaçao. Everything radiates freedom. Creativity. Wanderlust. And that's exactly what makes it the kind of place that gives me energy.

Mundo Bizarro: Dancing Guaranteed

Some places need no introduction. You walk by, hear music, step in for just one drink, and before you know it you're doing the salsa five minutes later. This is one of those places where you don't have to think — the music does the work for you. Easy peasy. That's how it always is for me at Mundo Bizarro. This iconic hotspot in Pietermaai breathes Cuban and Caribbean vibes. Colorful details, good cocktails, a lively crowd, and an interior that looks like it was flown in straight from Havana. Especially on Thursday evenings, this place really comes to life. That's when there's live music, and the restaurant slowly but surely transforms into a dance floor where everyone spontaneously dances the salsa. Because even if you think you can't dance, you'll get caught up in it anyway. And before you know it, you're a regular on that dance floor. That, as far as I'm concerned, is the magic of Mundo Bizarro.

Van Gogh Specialty Coffee: Coffee from a Vintage Car

Sometimes creativity lies simply in a good idea, like at Van Gogh Specialty Coffee. Because how often do you order your specialty coffee from a classic Citroën oldtimer? This unique coffee drive-thru in Pietermaai combines a love for coffee with a nice shot of character. In a hurry? Then you grab your coffee without even getting out of your car. Got more time? Then you can, of course, simply hang around on the terrace for a while. The concept is simple, but that's exactly what makes it so charming. And let's be honest: getting coffee from a vintage French van is just a little bit more fun than from a standard drive-thru. You can now also find Van Gogh Specialty Coffee in Punda, but the Pietermaai location remains the one with the most character, thanks to that classic Citroën oldtimer.

Lionfish Caribbean: Creativity with a Mission

Of all the creative concepts on Curaçao, this might just be one of the most unique. And the story behind it only makes it more beautiful. Here, everything revolves around the lionfish, an invasive species that has had a significant negative impact on the Caribbean coral reefs in recent years. Owner Lisette decided to do something about it. In the restaurant, lionfish is transformed into surprisingly delicious dishes. The flavor? Somewhere between cod and lobster. Light, refined, and absolutely worth trying.

But it doesn't stop there. In the boutique, you'll find jewelry made from lionfish fins and other elements from the sea. You can even take workshops where you make your own jewelry. That makes a visit so much more than just a lunch. You learn something about Curaçao's ecosystem, get creative yourself, *and* at the same time support an initiative that contributes to protecting the reefs. A combination of sustainability, storytelling, and creativity that you won't easily find anywhere else. Love it!

Curaçao — With Many Places That Linger in Your Memory

What I perhaps love most about Curaçao is that creativity here isn't only found in galleries. It's in the restaurants. In the hotels. In the coffee bars. In old monumental buildings. In colorful murals. In entrepreneurs who dare to create something special. It's exactly those places that make a destination stay with you. Not because they're perfect, but because they have character.
